Betta Fish Food and Feeding Methods for Beginners

Betta Fish Food and Feeding Methods:

Today, let us talk about Betta Fish Food.

  • The diet of the betta fish food should be rich in proteins. The best foods to feed for a betta fish are pellets, bloodworms which are frozen, brine shrimp.
  • As the betta fishes are tropical, it is acceptable to use the flake foods which are tropical. Betta fishes are carnivorous in nature and require food which is very much rich in proteins and also meaty. Tropical fish flakes are completely based on plants and do not have sufficient nutrients and proteins that we find in meat.
  • By using tropical flake foods for your betta fish, it does not cause any damage, but it may bloat the stomach of the fish which results in the diseases in the swim bladder.
  • The pellets which float are the most important and typical food which is offered to a betta fish. You can find many sizes of pellets from different brands. The most important thing is to select your required pellet for your fish. Before buying it, it is advised to check or read the list of ingredients mentioned on the package. The first thing you need to check is the amount of protein content in the package. It should have a crude protein content of about 33%.

  • You can also use sinking pellets for your betta fish as food. When betta fishes are grown in the wild, then they normally come to the surface of the water to eat. So sinking pellets are not that good to go with as there would be a chance of food to remain uneaten.
  • Betta flakes are another kind of food which is fed to betta fish. This is not that advantageous as it sinks very quickly into the water and it is highly uncontrollable to check the amount of food you are feeding to your betta fish. Moreover, as they sink very fast, it would be very difficult to remove the food which is uneaten.

  • Bloodworms are one of the most favorite foods of betta fishes. It is advised to buy the bloodworms which are frozen from the market rather than the live ones. They can be bought in little cubes and stored in the refrigerator. Make sure that you are not dropping the entire cube of frozen bloodworms into the tank. You need to cut the cube into tiny pieces, place it in a cup with some water taken from your tank. Then 2 or 3 worms get separated from the cue and you can use these at the time of feeding. If you drop more than this content, then it indicates the overfeeding of your fishes. If any of the bloodworms which are melted and separated from the cube are left uneaten, then they should be thrown out. They should not be used again.
  • The shrimp, bloodworms or krill, which is frozen and dried should be given as treats to the fishes. These should not be used as a staple food for the fish because they do not have good nutritional value in them. You can only use them as a replacement for three meals a week
  • Feeding your betta fish with peas is a good thing if you find your fish getting bloated or suffering from constipation. The pea which is boiled is a kind of fibre and helps the fish a lot from getting bloated. But make sure that you are not feeding the fish for one whole day if you have offered a pea in the previous days.
  • You can also use bloodworms with a day of fasting if your fish are suffering from constipation or bloating.
  • For a betta fish whose size is normal, it is essential to feed 2 to 3 pellets a day. You can feed all of them at once or separately. Make sure you are feeding only one pellet at a time and also check if the fish has completely swallowed the pellet.
